Every person in the city carries a Mark — a living piece of the Corelight that glows, moves, and tells the world exactly who you are.

Elias Vale has never had one. At sixteen he has spent his entire life as the absence in a room full of light. He knows how to make himself small. He knows how to disappear inside a crowd. He knows how to look like the Unmarked label in his file is the whole story.

It isn't. Running up both arms, from wrist to elbow, are fracture lines — thin gold-white cracks in his skin that glow from within. Lines that absorb the Corelight around him instead of producing it. Lines that the old texts, buried in the school archive, call by a different name entirely.

The Corelight has been broken for sixty years. Whatever broke it is still underground. And Elias Vale, the boy who was supposed to have nothing, is the only person alive who can put it back together.

But before he can fix what broke, he has to survive what broke it — and whoever made sure it stayed that way.

YA Fantasy Magic System Contemporary Setting Series — Book One

He had been practicing being nothing for so long that finding out he was something felt like learning a language he'd always spoken without knowing its name.

A First Look Inside

Chapter One — Briarline Academy

The light always bent away from him.

Not dramatically. Not in a way that most people noticed. Just a small thing — the way the overhead lights in a corridor would dim, very slightly, in the immediate circle of space around him. The way a room would seem a fraction cooler when he'd been standing in it for too long.

He had learned to move through hallways at a pace that didn't let any one section register the difference. A few seconds under any given light, then past it. The dimming never had time to settle into something visible.

He was sixteen. He had been doing this for four years. He was very good at it.

Lines from the Book

The Story in Three Moments

He had been practicing being nothing for so long that finding out he was something felt genuinely disorienting. Not triumphant. First it had to feel like the floor moving.

— On Elias

Everyone else's light bent away from him. Hers leaned in.

— On Lina and Elias

The Corelight didn't break because someone was careless. It broke because someone had to choose.
